The Northmont Girls Volleyball team has spent the past several weeks navigating a challenging stretch of its schedule, and while the results have not always fallen in the Thunderbolts' favor, the young group continues to show signs of growth, resilience, and an ability to respond when challenged.

With a roster featuring several players experiencing varsity volleyball for the first time, this season has been about learning how to compete consistently at a higher level. Through close sets, difficult losses, and important victories, the Bolts are continuing to discover what it takes to finish matches and compete together.

Northmont's early stretch showed just how close the margin can be. Against Centerville, the Bolts battled throughout four sets, falling 25-22, 25-15, 16-25, 25-19. Despite the loss, Northmont's 25-16 third-set victory was significant, marking the first time the program had taken a set from Centerville since 2020.

Two days later against Beavercreek, Northmont again showed flashes of what the young team is capable of. The Bolts held a 16-8 advantage in the opening set before Beavercreek rallied for a 25-23 win. Northmont responded after a difficult second set by putting itself in position to extend the match, leading 22-20 late in the third before eventually falling 25-23.

Those moments have become an important part of the learning process. The Bolts have proven they can build leads and compete with quality opponents. The challenge now is learning how to maintain that level of play and finish when the opportunity presents itself.

That lesson continued on the road at Arcanum. Northmont was within striking distance throughout the entire match but fell in three extremely competitive sets, 25-21, 26-24, and 25-21. The scoreboard showed a sweep, but the set scores reflected a match in which only a handful of points separated the two teams.

Northmont responded two days later with an important conference victory at Springfield. The Bolts controlled the opening two sets, 25-12 and 25-15. After Springfield answered by taking the third 25-20, Northmont didn't allow the match to slip away. Instead, the Bolts responded emphatically, dominating the fourth set 25-8 to secure the victory.

A difficult trip to Versailles followed, where Northmont fell 25-11, 25-12, 25-8. For a young team, matches like that can test confidence just as much as ability. The response afterward, however, showed the type of team Northmont is working to become.

Just two days later, the Thunderbolts traveled to Troy and earned one of their grittiest victories of the season.

Northmont captured the first set 25-21 before Troy answered with a 25-21 victory of its own. With the match tied, the Bolts found themselves in two pressure-filled sets where finishing became the difference. This time, Northmont delivered. The Thunderbolts took both the third and fourth sets by identical 25-23 scores to earn a four-set road victory.

The win represented more than another mark in the victory column. After experiencing several matches where late leads disappeared, the Bolts found themselves in tight situations and finished.

Northmont's latest challenge came against Springboro, where the Panthers controlled the match and earned a 25-15, 25-13, 25-16 victory. It was another difficult test in a schedule that has provided very few opportunities for this young group to become comfortable.

Through September 15, Northmont sits at 4-6 overall and 1-3 in conference play. But for this team, development can't be measured by the record alone.

There have been steps forward and steps backward. There have been leads that slipped away, sets where little went right, and moments where the Bolts looked like the young team they are. There have also been breakthrough sets, close battles, road victories, and moments when that same young team showed what it can become.

That's the reality of developing a young varsity team.

Growth isn't always linear, and it isn't always immediately reflected on the scoreboard. It's built through difficult practices, uncomfortable losses, close sets, and learning how to respond the next time the same situation presents itself.

The Bolts are still learning. They're still developing. And they're still being tested.

But through every battle, they're building.
